At the higher levels, I think a combined Q&A and lab is the only way
to go. The success of lab exam certifications over Q&A only is clear.
Costly though. I know that's been discussed.
GIAC had a great alternative to a lab exam going with their required
practical assignments until they dropped the practical (quantity over
quality I suppose...). While that was a good fit for security, it's
not really feasible for BSD. It'd be nice to find something similar
that would be less costly to offer, yet still provide reasonable
assurance of a certain level of competence. Easier said than done
though.
