Ok, checked it out and I had to hack the Makefile, adding a few
CONFIGURE_ARGS.  However, it does seem that one has to use euc at the
moment, not UTF-8.  

Still, it should cover my needs.  I wonder if I should add this to my
Japanese page. 

After adding the arguments and reinstalling, 
ÆüËܸ줬½ÐÍè¤Þ¤·¤¿

(That will only be legible if you have EUC encoding.)  At any rate, it's
Japanese, written in mutt, using vim in an mrxvt terminal.  :)
