I am using D-Link 16 port switches and an eight port  switch.
They are very reasonably priced and I have not had a bit of
trouble with anything from D-Link, network interface cards,
PC card bus network interface and switches.
For instance, at Fry's electronics, a chain on the west coast
the 16 port switches are under $100. Where as Netgear and
others are over $200.
