Well I don't want to "gut" FreeNAS. I'd want to add it as a feature. I'd
also want the thing to serve files and all the other fun stuff it does.

Anyway, I'm going to install FreeNAS on virtualbox and see what it does out
of the box. Then I can see what needs to be modified.
