The CUNY Institute for Software Design & Development (CISDD) is looking
for an Instructor for a 35-hour, lab-based class in Linux Security to be
held on the following dates:

Monday, 10/4/04, 9:00am-5:00pm
Tuesday, 10/5/04, 9:00am-5:00pm
Wednesday, 10/6/04, 9:00am-5:00pm
Thursday, 10/7/04, 9:00am-5:00pm
Friday, 10/8/04, 9:00am-5:00pm

This course may be held again, depending on demand.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This hands-on class is for experienced UNIX systems administrators
responsible for deploying secure open systems. This course will give
participants a solid understanding of basic issues, concepts, principles,
and mechanisms in Linux workstation and server security, including
properly defining security goals and identifying threats to networking
infrastructure and applications. Participants will explore alternative
security solutions and be exposed to commercial as well as Open Source
security technologies. This course will include the following topics:


• Introduction of concepts of general system security (defining network
security)
• Different types of security and operating systems used in real-world
• Introduction to the Linux Boot Process
• Advanced boot process INIT, runlevels and chkconfig tool
• OpenSSH setup, features and benefits over “clear text” utilities
• Running programs and processes securely and remotely (ssh, scp, sftp)
• Review of the Lockdown Checklist
• Bastille: Introduction, features and other similar alternative
solutions, installation and setup, running the Bastille script
• Old Linux and New Linux firewall and packet filtering technology
• Basic Iptables commands and functions, personal filewalls
• Gnome firewall functions (Security Level Configuration Tool and GNOME
Lokki)
• Other firewall solutions (Open Wall)
• Logs: Securing log files on your system, common security issues with
logs, securing Log files, searching logs for problems/Log rotation/diff,
creating logging servers, using applications to monitor logs (Gnome,
Swatch, Webmin)
• OpenSSH Discussion and Overview of features
• MD5 Encryption and Verification
• Setup sshd process and open firewall to allow ssh traffic
• Encryption of your personal password
• Conduct a GnuPg group signing
• Nmap: Introduction to tools and commands, overview of Nmap
documentation, Nmap command line basics, Nmap stealth scanning and output,
Graphical Nmap front end for Gnome Desktop
• Nessus: Introduction and overview, Network scanning using Nessus from a
GUI Front end
• Introduction to Server security tools and commands
• TCP Wrappers and xinetd
• Advanced Logging
• Locking down a server
• Controlling Server Resources

# Required Skills:

• Expert knowledge of System Administration in Unix and Linux
• Experience dealing with security issues on various operating systems and
software
• At least 3 years experience with hands-on training
• Experience with developing curriculum
• At least 5 years industry experience; strong knowledge and awareness of
the IT community
• Ability to teach on all course dates
