Required skills:

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of conveying ideas and applying knowledge to challenging tasks. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Writing basic documentation. Works well in a team.

* Well-versed with of most UNIX commands/utilities. Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes; for example, can boot/shutdown a machine, add and remove user accounts, use backup programs and fsck, maintain system files (groups, hosts, aliases, DNS name resolution, basic network configuration). Fundamental understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; for example, understands job control, soft and hard links, distinctions between the kernel and the shell. Good familiarity with Windows 2000 and up. Familiarity with how computers and networks interoperate, and Web technologies. Required background: One to three years of system administration experience or comparable helpdesk/NOC support. Desirable:

* A degree in computer science or a related field. Solid work experience can be substituted.

* Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment concepts; for example, can use the route command, add a workstation to a network, and mount remote filesystems.

* Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Perl, bash, sh, etc.)

* Programming experience in any applicable language. Appropriate responsibilities: Responding to trouble-tickets via an internal application and/or phone reports. Troubleshooting problems, or escalating them to the appropriate engineers/divisions. Applying new knowledge (through training, mentoring, documented processes) to handle more difficult tasks. Works under the general supervision of the NOC manager and Operations head. Opportunities are readily available to “graduate” from the NOC to other roles/departments, including Systems Administration, Networking, Applications, Database, Sales Support, etc. depending on drive, dedication and increased skill set.
