It is "good old-fashioned dd" . That is exactly what the author uses!
He just wraps it up with other utilities to make a neat little tool.
The reasons I like it are:
1. self contained boot disk
2. quick boot time
3. very small - fits on a floppy
4. any hardware - any OS
5. based on NetBSD
6. easy to use
7. does one thing and does it well
