I haven't read the RFC lately, but I'm positive that the protocol 
overhead is totally negligible compared to the size of the messages.  
Bandwidth is really the wrong measure anyway...  Any protocol is going 
to take as much bandwidth as it has available to it until it sends what 
it needs to send (given ideal TCP conditions and enough time, yadda 
yadda yadda), unless it's explicitly throttled.

In other words, you're probably asking the wrong question.  It really 
shouldn't matter.
