The big issues here are the library version bumps.  One thing that,
judging from freebsdforums.org many people are not clear about is
whether or not all ports and packages must be updated, and if so, can
one then remove the old libraries.

Judging from experiences posted on the forums, yes, one should probably
upgrade all ports.  However, once doing so, some things still need the
old libraries--for instance, native opera even if built from ports is a
binary rather than a source package.  The workaround here is

cd /usr/src/lib/compat/compat4x.i386
make depend && make && make install

This has pretty much worked for everyone.  (Thanks to phoenix on
FreeBSDforums for the tip)
