It is not, but it can be useful.   If for example, you have this in 
/etc/resolv.conf:

search unixathome.org

And you're doing host names such as freebsd.org.unixathome.org, the 
freebsd.org. will take you to the FreeBSD website, and freebsd.org 
will take you to .... Ummm, well that doesn't work, but that's the 
example I was trying to give....
