I can confirm, rsnapshot works reliably and well. We are also using
traditional UNIX backup utilities dump/restore. They are excellent for
doing backups of whole filesystems (working nicely in FreeBSD
environment because of ufs snapshots)
In hybrid environments with large amount of servers I am suggesting
some commercial solution like Veritas Netbackup or HP Data Protector.
