I need to get a faster MUA, something that could handle instant
messages and email threads with a converged interface.

the 'zephyr' protocol and its sorta-descendent 'gale' was originally
designed for just this itch, but I've never had either set up, and I
don't get the impression they scratched the itch particularly well.
