You can use WRKDIRPREFIX in make.conf(5) to keep your tree pristine.
I do this just for that reason.

    %% make.conf %%
    WRKDIRPREFIX?=	/dumpster/scratch
    NOCLEANDEPENDS=	yes
    PACKAGES=		/dumpster/packages/All
    DISTDIR=		/dumpster/distfiles
