It will be preceded by two days of tutorials on 7-8 June (Wed-Thu). Also: do not miss out on the Goat BOF on Tuesday 6 June. We are now accepting proposals for talks. The talks should be designed with a very strong technical content bias. Proposals of a business development or marketing nature are not appropriate for this venue. See http://www.bsdcan.org/2017/ If you are doing something interesting with a BSD operating system, please submit a proposal. Whether you are developing a very complex system using BSD as the foundation, or helping others and have a story to tell about how BSD played a role, we want to hear about your experience. People using BSD as a platform for research are also encouraged to submit a proposal. Possible topics include: * How we manage a giant installation with respect to handling spam. * and/or sysadmin. * and/or networking. * Cool new stuff in BSD * Tell us about your project which runs on BSD * other topics (see next paragraph) >From the BSDCan website, the Archives section will allow you to review the wide variety of past BSDCan presentations as further examples. Both users and developers are encouraged to share their experiences. The schedule is: 1 Dec 2016 Proposal acceptance begins 19 Jan 2017 Proposal acceptance ends 19 Feb 2017 Confirmation of accepted proposals See also > Instructions for submitting a proposal to BSDCan 2017 are available from: > From announce at lists.nycbug.org Wed Jan 25 08:33:00 2017 From: announce at lists.nycbug.org (NYC*BUG Announcements) Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2017 13:33:00 +0000 Subject: [announce] NYC*BUG Upcoming: OS: the underlying overhead of computation Message-ID: March 1, 645 PM Suspenders Restaurant 2nd Floor 108 Greenwich Street by Rector Street Manhattan OS : The underlying overhead of computation An operating system is a piece of code intended to help computer operators load punch cards -- hence "operating". The timesharing system was created to allow interactive shared access to the handful of computers which existed at the time. We will examine what is in the interactive punch card loader in 2017, what actually belongs in there, and why things are the way they are. Like science, the talk is highly religious. Unlike computer science, the talk is grounded in reality. Discussions, heretical opinions, and questions are encouraged. Bio Antti Kantee has been a NetBSD committer since the 1900's and has managed to do many sorts of damage. He is probably best (or worst, depending on who you ask) known for his decade-long workhaul on rump kernels. Antti very recently moved to the Princeton area, so in case he appears particularly absent during his talk, he got lost on the way to the venue.
