In looking at my 5.4 box I see ..

[doon at hobbiton:~] uname -a
FreeBSD hobbiton.home.doon.us 5.4-STABLE FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE #1: Fri Sep 23
15:26:40 EDT 2005
root at hobbiton.home.doon.us:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/HOBBITON  i386
[doon at hobbiton:~] named -v
BIND 9.3.1

I am still running OpenBSD 3.6 on my firewall, and it uses bind 9.2 and I
don't use forwarders.

anyway a question, is your forwarders inside an options clause ?

options{
 fowarders{
    205.231.144.10; 205.231.144.2;
  };
};

Other options omitted...

I don't normally use forwarders in my configs, so it is just a shot in the
dark
