We have thousands of developers using our platform and tens of millions of devices reporting back to us on a regular basis. Our backend is a mix of managed Linux boxes and AWS, with services you'd both expect and hope for: syslog-ng + Splunk for log aggregation Hadoop + (Hive, HBase, etc.) for data aggregation MySQL (particularly Percona's builds) for reporting) Nagios/cacti/... for monitoring LDAP for auth We have lots of boxes and lots of data. We continue to think through new means of managing both of those, and are always open to innovation that helps to improve scalability and drive down cost. We're looking for someone to join our ops team to manage boxes, services and data in line with what I've described above. Drop me a note if you're interested. Best, Eric -- Eric A. Message-ID: <20091007015213.GD10721@netmeister.org> Hello, Yahoo!, the little internet portal that could, has a number of openings for unixy people. It's not secret that Yahoo! is using FreeBSD for a large portion of their hosts, but the job requirements are in general not all that operating system specific. All of the openings are in CA, but I know that there are numerous people on this list who aren't even in NY, and New Yorkers do occasionally venture out to Krazy CA, so what the hell, let's post here, too. Since there are multiple openings, I won't send the whole job posting, just the one-line summary. If you're interested, please contact me indicating which position(s) you're interested in and consider yourself qualified for. The overall sales pitch for the company goes something like this: "Think about impacting 1 out of every 2 people online--in innovative and imaginative ways that are uniquely Yahoo!. We do just that each and every day, and you could too. After all, it's big thinkers like you who will create the next generation of Internet experiences for consumers and advertisers across the globe. Now's the time to show the world what you've got. Put your ideas to work for over half a billion people." In addition, Y! is a very fun place to work, and there are few places that operate on a scale like this, so you get to solve problems that others won't ever encounter. Anyway, the following are the current openings we have: - Systems Security Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24441 - Infrastructure Manager- Storage& Data Protection http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24445 - Storage QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24446 - Sr. System Administrator http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24451 - Sr. Software Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24454 - Senior Systems Engineer/Architect Traffic Management (DNS) http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24459 - Network Engineer- Backbone http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24505 - Network QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24514 - Storage QA http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24520 - Senior Software QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24521 - Network QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24522 - Datacenter Ops Engineer-Lab http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24515 - Network Security Operations Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24606 All positions are preferably in Sunnyvale, CA, USA. Almost all involve being part of an on-call rotation. I can't promise to respond to all inquiries, but I will forward resumes of qualified candidates. Part-time consulting gig.. Message-ID: Hi all, I wanted to reach out to members of the FreeBSD Community in case any of you might be interested in a part-time consulting position I have available in NYC. We are looking for a FreeBSD system administrator on a contracting basis, not a full time hire (not at this time anyway). (This person HAS to have FreeBSD knowledge, not just Linux.) The two projects this person would help on/advise on are: 1. Setup a process and a tool kit to help us deploy new machines within an hour. So, in case we have a spike in load - we can easily add more machines (right now it takes us a week or so) 2. Devise and implement security policies around how developers will access our machines and who gets root access. Right now, probably 10 - 20 hours a week for a couple of months on the top end (hopefully no more than a month). But, next year - we will probably be looking for someone who can guide and advise (who has done it before) - but does not need to do it do the work necessarily. Please drop me an email if you'd like more details. You can also reach me at 201 258 4636. Thanks! Message-ID: <47f344f40910070856j691b4ccbvda11458eaf2e11a4@mail.gmail.com> This isn't BSD-specific (having knowledge of multiple platforms is necessary) but I think the skills required exist on this list. Here goes: My team (professional services, network test automation) at Spirent Communications is looking to fill a full-time position. Initially, there will be an on-site 1-year engagement in Middletown, NJ. After that engagement, you'd be part of a professional services team that travels about 25% The job consists of working directly with customers to automate testing their network environments (usually test labs). We work with NEMs like Cisco and Juniper, and Service Providers like Deutsche Telekom, SFR and Verizon. The job requires: - insatiable curiosity - patience with customers and coworkers (don't be a jerk) - (often cross-cultural) communication skills (don't be a jerk in languages other than english) - creative problem-solving - facility with general programming. We use Tcl heavily, but not exclusively. - desire to do technical as well as project management type tasks - a good sense of humor - a tolerance for Microsoft technologies in addition to non-MS stuff. - a love of travel and a tolerance for airport shenanigans (25% is a lot, but it's not like you travel every week) Big Pluses: - Solid protocol knowledge (at all layers) - familiarity with test methodologies A big potential perk is that my team is mostly "work from home". After the 1 year on-site gig, you'd probably be working from home as well.
