Hi NYCBUG,
I hope that you all had a nice Labor Day. I'm currently working on a systems administration role that is particularly focused on candidates wth FreeBSD and Networking experience. Given the focus, I was excited to get it out to the group.
Our client is OKCupid, they are a Match.com company and therefore owned by IAC. While the company itself is run very much like a startup (small team of 20, flat hierarchy) they have the stability of both being a public company and being owned by an extremely stable media company. Below is a more detailed description of this role.
"We are OkCupid, a top-5 free online dating site based in Manhattan. We’ve grown tremendously due to our analytic approach to features and our phenomenally popular blog.
At 600 million page views a month, we deal with exciting scalability and reliability challenges every day. As our System Administrator you'll be devising clever solutions, managing a state of the art server setup, and safeguarding the data of 10 million users. Sound awesome? We thought so.
At OkCupid you’ll find that you play an important role in the direction of the company, that new ideas are acted upon quickly, and that merit is rewarded generously. It's seriously rewarding to build a system that lets millions of people find love for free.
We...
- work hard, play hard, get along great, and love what we do
- chill together at lunch, after work, and play games every Thursday afternoon
- focus on learning and professional development
- have complex problems that require simple and elegant solutions
- are constantly evolving to stay three steps ahead of the industry
- have a pool table. Need we say more?
You...
- have a degree in Computer Science or a related field
- are intimately familiar with MySQL, FreeBSD, networking, and storage technology
- keep up on the latest technological developments (SSDs, cloud computing, etc...)
- have an analytical mind and like solving open-ended decision problems
- understand cost benefit analysis and constrained risk minimization
- have a deep understanding of the Linux or FreeBSD kernel
- understand concepts like caching, swap death, shared libraries, and RAID
- have a detailed understanding of email relaying and spam filtering
- are extremely security conscious
- are an expert at multitasking and prioritization
- strike the right balance between speed and quality
- are passionate about building the best dating site in the world"
If anything I mentioned here sounds interesting, please don't hesitate to reach out with the expectation of confidentiality to Sabrina McGrail - smcgrail at winterwyman.com or call 212-616-3527. I'm happy to network, share details or any discuss other positions I'm currently working on.
Best,
Sabrina
