From slitt at troubleshooters.com Wed Dec 3 04:30:10 2025 From: slitt at troubleshooters.com (Steve Litt) Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2025 04:30:10 -0500 Subject: [Semibug] Discussion: The TRUTH: Linux and Scanners: 12/3/2025 7pm Eastern STANDARD time Message-ID: <20251203043010.3b613201@mydesk.domain.cxm> Hi all, Where: GoLUG Online: https://meet.jit.si/golug When: Wednesday, 12/3/2025 7pm sharp Eastern STANDARD time Arrive 15 minutes early for Microphone check & discussion Who: Steve Litt, Troubleshooter, Developer, Tech Writer What: The TRUTH: Linux and Scanners At last months presentation I told you all about Linux and scanners. Well, it turned out to be BS. For instance, nothing could be less true than my last-month's assertion that "the brscan5 driver actually has drivers for several scanners", which is the farthest thing from the truth. The brscan5 driver is one driver, that's it. How it talks to all those different drivers, well, that's quite a story. I now have 50 hours of reverse engineering into this subject, and believe me, the truth is much stranger than fiction. At the 12/3 presentation I'll quickly gloss over the computer-scanner architecture, tell the truths I didn't tell last month, and end up with a discussion of reverse engineering, which is necessary for a Mental Model of the system. And of course, the Mental Model is necessary for both troubleshooting and design of new components. The 12/3 presentation is based on the new version of web page https://troubleshooters.com/linux/void/voidbrother.htm . I'm sure Brother's engineers know this material, but none of them have assembled it into an accurate and readable document. Feedback on last month's presentation is that for 3/4 of you, the scanner "just works". But wouldn't you like to know what's under the hood? It's a fascinating technological plunge, and if you have questions, I'll be able to answer them. Hope to see you there.
