Well I always thought working at a college gave you much licence to
write cool toys, its called research.  And keep in mind colleges hate
buying stuff when they can build it in house.  And I do thing getting
at least a BA/BS is a very good idea.  There is a lot of work that
requires a 4+ year degree to even apply.  I do not know what "you"
will be doing in 5, 10, 20 years and it would be a shame to lock
yourself out of all of that work.  Remember what is cool at 20 may not
be cool at 40.
