Just as a follow up I did a dd from the raw device and piping it to md5
with the filesystem unmounted.  Since the md5 changed everytime I'm
fairly certain it is a hardware issue and have called highpoint and
gotten an RMA number.

It took me long enough to realize it but I didn't have to dd that exact
file as long as I could reproduce the issue with a dd from anywhere on
the device.
