Thanks everyone for the replies!  svnd(4) and vnconfig(8) seem to be  
the combo I was looking for, and oh, I guess I can bear to deal with  
blowfish (/sigh).

(For clarity, just kidding there- blowfish is delightfully  
appropriate for my uses).
