I think it saves one DNS round-trip for the guy sending you mail.  but
it's mostly for tradition that you put it there, so we can recognize
each other as part of the old tribe.

your example was not like the above.  It was different.  

If you have a mail loop, just look at the Received-by: headers in the
bounced message.
