hmm...that's a tough one IMHO. i view PFSense as more of an appliance, so
while sure the drivers do exist for the underlying OS - i can see how it
would be helpful for the dev. to have access to "exotic" hardware to get
it working and tested correctly.
my reasoning is that the presentation layer is pretty tightly coupled with
the kernel{drivers}/OS layer with appliances such as this.
