Strange.  I use an Atheros card on FreeBSD 6.2, and it works fine.
I'm not using hostapd, just using ifconfig to set the card's mode to hostap
("mediaopt hostap"),
and there's a dhcpd behind it.  No issues to speak of.

...maybe I'm doing something wrong.
