You might consider looking at SSHFS.

When you say "file storage/access", do you mean ftp-style or more 
synchronous?  SSHFS is better for the former, not the latter, AFAIK.

I haven't looked at it in a while, but the OSX version was decently 
maintained. . .no idea if it runs on the iPad.
