I've used

fullname() {
        local readonly arg="${1}"
        echo $(cd $(dirname ${arg}) && pwd -P)/$(basename ${arg})
}

for determining the arguments absolute full path.  This isn't builtins,
but it ensures you get the actual physical path (ie, all symlinks are
resolved).
