To be clear the problem isnt really the forward-zone statement in itself.
The problem is that the google DNS service does not give the real
answer to that query. They make up their own NXDOMAIN it seems.

If you keep using that forward statement but instead point it at a
recursive server that does not do that kind of trickery it should work
as well.
