[CDBUG-talk] File server on a VM?

I want to get a file server setup on a VM at work. I've got maybe
50-100 users connecting to a MacOS X 10.6.8 server over AFP right now.
It seems to run out of file handlers or something on a regular basis,
though, and I end up having to restart it. I'm hoping that moving to
a FreeBSD system would help.
I was wondering what you guys thought of this. Any comments or suggestions?
I have a VM cluster that is basically a Linux KVM system with the
vendor's streamlined web GUI on top. So FreeBSD's VirtIO drivers (in
GENERIC since 10.x, I think) seem to work well on it. This makes me
wonder about FreeNAS (using UFS, not ZFS, since its in a VM) or bare
metal installing NetATalk or Samba. But I need to find a way to
integrate it into our Open Directory system. FreeNAS can do that via
the web GUI, but I don't know how to do that with a regular FreeBSD,
NetAtalk, and/or Samba install.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Jaime
