There was a question about sound last night. I know that in my 2
towers I have to change the default device if I want to use the
headphone jack vs the audio out on the back of the tower.

if you do a:

# cat /dev/sndstat

it should show your audio devices.
you can change the audio device with a sysctl.

the sysctl is :
# sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=1

that may not be the issue with HDMI and sound but it may be a place to start.

I have found that I had to close the application, change the sound
device, then reopen the application

In pcbsd they have a nice GUI to change it if you like that sort of thing.
