If anyone is actually interested in a fairly detailed explanation of 
what OS X is, find it here

While it is most certainly not a let us all split hairs pure 100% *BSD, 
it is also more *BSD than a little or a lot of "BSD utilities".

Certainly, if an OS X user wants to solve a problem or learn more about 
what is under the hood, a BSD-user group would be as good place as any 
to start assuming, of course, they were welcome.
