Using MySQL to benchmark OS performance

The following operating systems were used for the comparison testing:
    * FreeBSD 4.11
    * FreeBSD 5.3
    * NetBSD 2.0
    * Linux 2.6
    * Linux 2.4
    * Solaris 10 x86 (build 69)
    * OpenBSD 3.6

Conclusion:
After having performed all of the tests and compiled the results, there
were quite a few surprises that I think will challenge a few
tightly-held assumptions in regards to which operating systems are fast
and which aren't. In the next article, I'll present the results for all
six operating systems.
