I think using /var for a website implies that there is only one
website on the host. I was suprised to see this when I first started
using FreeBSD, but I accept it now as "one of those things." It's
better than /usr/local/apache/htdocs for sure.
For virtual hosting setups, or situations where multiple users need to
access the same site, I always put them in the /home tree as
/home/<virtual host name>
