Well, according to most reports, he took over the popclient package,
changed the name, and added some features. Some people think the
features are minor enough that it didn't really warrant all the press
coverage that some people (largely, esr himself) gave it.

I don't know too much about that, but I do know that fetchmail has had
some serious security holes surface over the years that kept me away
(even as recent as 2005/2006), so I've stuck with getmail.
