nice thanks Marc.  IIRC what is done here is you extend SNMP to run
custom shell code to generate metrics on space usage, the ARC etc...

at one point i had some code to do something similar using graphite, i
should probably try to dig that up and post it publicly somewhere.  i
was waiting for a newer FreeBSD release so i could pull additional
metrics via dtrace in userland.
