[Semibug] Need Help with C language

Hi Folks:

 I am trying to understand the C code in "Numerical Recipes for C". I came across this puzzling
fragment:

for ( it=1, j=1; j <= n-1; j++ )  it <<= 1;
.....
.....
I know that it << 1 is a bitwise shift operation. What does it <<= 1 mean?
